| Registry and Authorization of Merchant Marine Personnel |
| Once Merchant Marine personnel have successfully completed their studies, Prefectura registers and authorizes them to navigate. This organization provides them with the relevant shipping documentation. Prefectura is also involved in the qualification and training of crew members from the Merchant Marine. To this end, it has various schools within its premises, both for deck and auxiliary services personnel. This contribution to the Merchant Marine development is complemented with specific training courses -which are envisaged under the related international conventions-, on the proper identification of requirements to be met for safety of navigation purposes. Likewise, Prefectura conducts medical examinations in order to check and certify the physical fitness of staff. Additionally, vessels are granted a safety manning certificate by the Institution. The identification of the safety manning is conducted in accordance with the international and domestic regulations in force, as per the particular characteristics of each ship and the service for which it is intended, in order to ensure that the most essential services as well as the emergency services operate properly. Shipowners, maritime agents, naval experts, engineers, shipbuilders and technicians, along with other navigation-related shore personnel categories, complete the range of activities that are subject to registry and authorization by Prefectura, which also has to keep a record of their background information and professional performance. |
